Sacropenia

What is Sacropenia?

Sacropenia is characterised as an age-associated loss of muscle mass and strength, resulting in functional limitations. Beginning at the age of 40, it is said to result in a loss of 50% of muscle mass by the age of 80.

Risk factors;

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Level of physical activity

Can it be reversed?

Although some of the causes of sarcopenia are a natural consequence of ageing, others are preventable. In fact, a healthy diet and regular exercise can reverse sarcopenia, increasing lifespan and quality of life.

One of the main non invasive treatment modalities for sarcopenia is resistance exercise. Strength training causes hypertrophy and an increase in muscle strength through training programs which include progressive volumes and the use of different loads resulting in an array of neurological and metabolic adaptations.
